Is Whole House Surge Protection Worth It?

Lightning gets the blame, but most surges start much closer to home.

Where surges come from

A surge is a brief spike in voltage. Lightning near a power line causes the largest ones. Far more frequent are the small surges from utility switching, from power returning after an outage and from motors inside your own building: the furnace blower, the air conditioner, the well pump, the compressor in the shop.

Small surges rarely destroy anything outright. They wear down circuit boards a little at a time, and one day the furnace control or the refrigerator board fails for no obvious reason.

What a whole house surge protector does

A surge protective device mounts at the main panel and diverts excess voltage to ground before it spreads through the branch circuits. One device covers every circuit, including hardwired equipment that a power strip cannot protect: the furnace, the water heater, the EV charger and the garage door opener.

What it does not do

It cannot guarantee protection against a direct lightning strike on the building. It also does not replace point-of-use protectors for computers and home theater equipment. The two form layers, with the panel device taking the large hit and the strip handling what remains.

Who benefits most

  • Homes at the end of long rural lines
  • Homes with newer high-efficiency furnaces, heat pumps or variable-speed equipment
  • Homes with an EV charger, solar or a standby generator
  • Home offices and anyone with a smart home system
  • Shops and businesses with electronic controls

Installation

Installation usually takes about an hour. The device connects to a two-pole breaker in the panel and should sit as close to the main as possible. Good grounding matters, so the grounding system is checked as part of the visit.

How long it lasts

Surge protectors absorb energy and wear out gradually. An indicator light shows that protection is active. Check it a few times a year and after any major storm.

Set against the cost of one furnace control board, the price is modest. See whole house surge protection to schedule an install.
